SB 605 (2025): medical debt reporting

In effect
Citation:
Or. Rev. Stat. 646A.677
Effective:
Jan 1, 2026

In Oregon, medical service providers may not report the amount or existence of medical debt to a consumer reporting agency, and a consumer reporting agency may not include an item it knows or should know is medical debt. The 2025 law also widened the definition of medical debt beyond hospital bills.

What you can do

Pull your free reports and dispute any medical debt that your state says should not be reported.

Security freezes and fraud alerts

Security freeze (Oregon Consumer Identity Theft Protection Act)

In effect
Citation:
Or. Rev. Stat. 646A.606 to 646A.618

Oregon law lets you place a security freeze on your credit file, which stops a credit bureau from releasing your report to most new creditors until you lift it. Since September 21, 2018, federal law also makes placing and lifting a freeze free at each nationwide credit bureau.

What you can do

Place a free freeze online or by phone at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and keep any PIN or login you create.
